Grade 7

Students will be bringing Unit 1 test home to review and for signatures. Students are looking at the characteristics of a natural environment and animals that survive in unique situations. We will be discussing the cod crises of the 1990's; as well as, our interaction with the environment.

Grade 8

Students will be bringing Unit 1 test home to review and for signatures. Students are describing the population distribution and density of various countries; as well as, the factors that influence populations: natural growth rate of the population; net migration rate; and the variance in population. We will also discuss demographic trends in the world.

Grade 7

This week the students will be having a test on Chapter 1 focusing on: new vocabulary, what is public transportation and its advantages, how to find absolute location of a site, and a choice question on one of a) the advantages of transporting merchandise using containers, or b) the advantages and disadvantages of transporting merchandise by truck. We will also begin Chapter 2 vocabulary about the environment and its interactions.

Grade 8

This week the students will be having a test on Chapter 1 focusing on: new vocabulary, important differences between rural and urban communities, drawing a scheme of the planning zones of a city, and a choice question on one of a) how do urban planners plan for communities, or b) describe the types of sites where communities establish themselves. We will also begin Chapter 2 vocabulary about exploring the constants in demographics.

Grade 7

Students completed their assignment on interpreting a map. It will be sent home shortly for parent signatures. Please review the assignment, sign it and return it to school. This week students will be discussing public transport and the advantages and disadvantages of transporting good by truck, train, and boat; as well as, the benefits and inconveniences of using containers when transporting good.

Grade 8

Students are completing their assignment on analyzing a map and using a topographic map to analyze a site.  These assignments will be sent home soon. Please review it, sign it and return to school. We will be discussing different zones of communities and how an urban planner beautifies communities.

For both Grade 7's and Grade 8's, we begin Géography. Report cards for Term 1 will reflect the student's mark in Histoire and report cards for Term 2 will reflect the student's mark in Géography.

Grade 7

In Chapter 1, students will observe how various locations are unique by looking at their physical and human characteristics. We will discuss how to read a map (latitude and longitude) and how to find a site using relative and exact location finders. Students will complete an assignment on how to interpret a map. (Text p. 13)

Grade 8

In Chapter 1, we examine the ways in which we recognize the human constants in communities. We will discuss differences between a rural and an urban community and the 4 types of sites where communities are established. Students will complete an assignment about analyzing a map and the information it gives you. (Text p. 13)

Happy new year to everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break.

Grade 7

This week we begin our final chapter (Chapter 9) in History. This unit focuses on building for the future. We will discuss Lord Durham and his report which includes discussions on responsible government, uniting the Canadas, and the question of representation. We will also discuss the Union Act which will become The British North America Act that created the Canadian Confederation.

Grade 8

This week we begin our final chapter (Chapter 9) in History. This unit focuses on Canada as we approach the First World War. We will discuss the role of Canada in the British Empire and our role in the Boers War.

Grade 7

Students will be bringing home the Chapter 6 vocabulary test. Please review it, sign it and return to school. This week we begin Chapter 7 which focuses on conflict and conflict resolution. We will examine 4 types of conflict and examples of these in history.

Grade 8

Students will be bringing home the Chapter 6 vocabulary test. Please review it, sign it and return to school. This week we begin Chapter 7 which focuses on growth and development.  We begin with a comparison of 2 cities: Lethbridge and Sudbury. We will examine how population growth leads to growth in industry.

Grade7

 The students will have his/her project and chapter booklet returned to them this week from Chapter 5.  Students began chapter 6 by decoding words and expressions as part of new vocabulary for the chapter.  Students responded to questions in order to get certain pieces to a puzzle. Once the puzzle was completed we discovered the long-term and immediate causes of the war of 1812.  This week we will look at some important people of the war of 1812; as well as, some very important battles that took place right here in our city.  We will be having a test on chapter 6 vocabulary at the end of the week.

Grade 8

 The students will have his/her project and booklet on chapter 5 returned this week.  Students began chapter 6 with a decoding exercise where they determined the vocabulary words or expressions for the chapter.  Next, students answered questions in order to receive puzzle pieces. When the puzzle was completed they had information with regards to the development of the west and the run for gold. This week we will discuss the difficulties prospectors had and the dangers they encountered as they went in search for riches out west. We will be having a test on chapter 6 vocabulary at the end of the week.
